Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). If left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss. At Clearwater Eye and Laser Center in Clearwater, FL, ophthalmologists Dr. Kyle Linsey, Dr. Tanya Perich, and Dr. Kurt Repke provide expert care to help patients manage glaucoma and preserve their vision. Early detection and consistent treatment are key to slowing the progression of this condition.
Prescription Eye Drops to Lower Pressure
For the majority of patients, prescription eye drops are the initial treatment for glaucoma. These eye drops decrease IOP by either decreasing fluid production in the eye or enhancing the outflow of fluid from the eye. There are various drops, and your ophthalmologist will select the most suitable one for your type of glaucoma and your specific pressure level. It is essential to use these drops as instructed. Even if symptoms are not apparent, untreated high pressure can lead to damage over time.
Laser Therapy to Improve Drainage
When eye drops alone are insufficient or if patients require an alternate modality, laser treatment can be advised. One of the most common treatments is selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), which treats open-angle glaucoma by enhancing fluid drainage through the natural channel of the eye. Another, laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI), is most commonly used for angle-closure glaucoma and is used to create a tiny opening in the iris to allow for easier fluid flow. Both procedures are performed in the office setting and can effectively decrease IOP while also reducing the need for daily medication.
Surgical Options for Long-Term Control
If glaucoma is continuing to progress despite other interventions, surgery may be necessary. A trabeculectomy is the formation of a new drainage passageway in the eye that allows fluid to flow out and reduces pressure. Glaucoma drainage implants, which can be tubes or shunts, are implanted in the eye to facilitate controlled fluid flow out of the eye. In people with mild to moderate glaucoma, especially if they are undergoing cataract surgery as well, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) is generally an option. MIGS procedures have shorter recoveries and fewer risks than traditional surgery, but still offer significant pressure reduction.
